Chizuko Ueno was born in 1948 in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. She’s a Japanese sociologist and a feminist, well known for advocating for the rights of Japanese women. Ueno did this through projects such as writing her books, ​​The Study of the 'Sexy Girl' (セクシィ・ギャルの大研究) and Reading the Housewife Debates (主婦論争を読む) which both discussed the 1960s movement, “Women’s Lib” (ウーマン・リブ), and the 1970s movement, Women's Liberation Movement (女性解放運動). Ueno also lectured at the University of Tokyo. She helped establish the domain of gender studies in Japan’s academic system and is the Chief Director of the Women's Action Network (WAN) a program that connects feminists from different cultural standings. Chizuko Ueno similarly engages with topics such as nationalism, capitalism, and family issues.
