Feminist to Know: Mia Mingus

Mia Mingus is an educator, organizer, and writer, focusing on disability justice and transformative justice. She is especially known for her mutual aid work with the Bay Area Transformative Justice Collective (BATJC) of which she is a founding member. Mingus is, in her own words, “a queer physically disabled Korean transracial and transnational adoptee raised in the Caribbean.” As a survivor of sexual assault, Mingus is also deeply involved in fostering safety for all while continuing to oppose state carceral systems. Her activism is based around assessing people’s needs and finding ways to meet them that reduce harm to the greatest extent possible. Her organizing is a reflection of her desire for liberation and interdependency.

In 2014, Mingus was chosen as an Asian and Pacific Islander women’s Champion of Change by the Obama White House. She was also named one of the Advocate’s 40 Under 40 in 2010. Mingus writes regularly for her blog, “Leaving Evidence,” and for other publications including Octavia’s Brood.
