Feminist to Know: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a U.S. Representative, serving parts of Queens and The Bronx in Congress. Known affectionately as AOC, she is a vocal critic of how government and private industry can cause harm in the lives of marginalized residents, using her position within the Congress to advance structural change. AOC has sponsored bills such as the Climate Equity Act of 2020, legislation to ban police use of chemical weapons, and the Green New Deal for Public Housing Act. She is one of few working-class women of color in Congress, and one of the first woman Democratic Socialists to reach the office.
Alongside Congresswomen Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib, AOC has endured unprecedented levels of racism, sexism, and far-right harassment since taking office. She sets an example of accountability, style, and fearlessness, providing a shining testament to the existence of a feminist Representative. Also of note, AOC recently played Among Us on Twitch, she still hasn’t divulged her skincare routine, and she famously walloped Mark Zuckerberg. (Happy late birthday, AOC!)
