The women’s march has been controversial from the outset. Some noted the unduly deserved focus on white women, both in design and execution, who, despite having voted overwhelmingly for Trump, received the most support and recognition (frequently at the expense of the comfort of Black women around them). Others called out the inherent transphobia obvious in the emphasis on female genitalia both in signs and the ubiquitous pussy hat itself. And while political marches matter––not only as displays of passion, but to the very people who attend them -- they are not the only form of protest that makes a difference.
For many, the women’s march is not a space that is accessible or welcoming. Keeping these feminists in mind, we have compiled a list of five impactful actions that can serve as alternatives (or supplements) to the march.
(1). Donate to feminist organizations - There are so many great organizations doing work on various social justice fronts. Here are three that we love: Black Lives Matter, Critical Resistance, & the ACLU!
(2). Support feminist candidates in the midterms - Vote! Canvass! Phonebank! Make Facebook post! Here’s how to find local candidates near you, and here’s how to become one yourself!
(3). Report Trump's tweets to Twitter - This may seem trivial, but the man is dancing on the precipice of sending us into war (nuclear or otherwise)....constantly. I’d call that a threat of violence.
(4). We were going to say call your senators here, but the government has shut down again. Instead, read up on the ME TOO Congress act - so you can support it when Congress resuscitates our system of governance.
(5). Listen to the people least enfranchised by the Women’s March - Then ask what you can do next.
